Schalk and brown first met around 2015 at a conference devoted to Octavia Butler and soon after, the professor invited brown to speak to her class at the University of Wisconsin–Madison about Octavia’s Brood, an anthology co-edited by brown about the connections between radical speculative fiction and social justice movements.
